Childbirth, for many women, is a process that seems scary, complicated, and confusing. In childbirth classes, we focus on the normal process of birth, make you comfortable with the process, and help you understand how to work with your body and what interventions are and when any might used. We take the time to listen to your concerns, and give you the knowledge to help you confront any apprehension you or your partner might have. We have also built classes that allow you to share your knowledge and insights with other moms. Finally, being in a class with other parents helps you build a community of families facing the same transition you are facing; you will know you are not alone during this exciting, but uncertain, time.
Our only goal is to serve the needs of families during pregnancy and early parenting. We work very hard to create an environment that is warm, welcoming, and supportive. At BabyLove, we provide you with the most current evidence-based information for your pregnancy, birth, and beyond. And unlike other independent classes, we are in our own space, which allows us to regularly schedule a variety of classes months in advance so you can find classes that fit your needs and your busy life. Our childbirth classes are Lamaze classes, which we truly believe is the gold standard for what childbirth education should be.
Our location is easy to get to, with lots of free parking, in a clean, relaxed environment. Finding our schedule and signing up is very easy. Our classes are moderately priced and include many handouts and a book that has online components, so you get a great value. Finally, all of our classes are interactive, featuring lots of time to practice, ask questions, and get you involved in learning!
First of all, there are good hospital classes out there, but we also know there are classes that are very large, impersonal, fear-based, and based off of outdated evidence. We are also trained and certified educators, which means that not only do we know the information, but we know how to assist mothers and their support people with the learning process. We can be flexible with our classes to meet the changing needs of the families. Finally, because we have our own independent space, we have many options for both times and types of classes.
We firmly believe that birth is birth. We agree with the Lamaze philosophy that birth can take place safely in a variety of setting when trained care providers are present, but we also know that every mother deserves great, evidence-based information about what can happen and how to work with her body, no matter where she will be or who will be there. There are always times and places for appropriate interventions, and even out of hospital births can have those situations come up. You will be prepared for any expected and unexpected situations. Regardless of where the baby is born, we want you to leave our classes more confident in your body's ability to give birth and knowing you have the tools to achieve the out of hospital birth you have planned.
While it's wonderful to hear that you have been proactive about learning about what's going to happen, the truth is that not all books have current, accurate, evidence-based information. Not all videos are all that great, either. TV shows rarely depict birth accurately, even reality-based shows. And while some mothers have great information to share, sometimes their information is out of date or based on a negative experience. Every birth is different and it is important to give you the accurate information you need to have the birth you want and deserve.
Pain medication only addresses part of birth, but does not address anything related to having a healthy pregnancy, nor does it prepare you for the changes of becoming a mother. We also know, from experience of working with mothers, that many people don't fully understand how the different pain medications are given or how they work. And like every other intervention, the use of medication has benefits and risks to how they affect your labor and birth. It's also unrealistic to expect that you will never need to feel and work with your labor, and we can help you understand what realistic expectations are. We'll explain what the options are and how they are done so you can make a fully informed decision. Also, pain medication isn't always feasible for women for a variety of reasons, so it's always helpful to have another plan, just in case
Natural birth means something different for every person. As Lamaze educators we fully support natural, safe, and healthy birth practices. In classes we focus on a healthy pregnancy and the normal, biological process of birth. After learning about the normal process of birth you can better understand how interventions are used and when they could be appropriate for your birth. No matter the type of birth you desire, it's always important to understand every available option so you can make an informed decision if the need arises.
The Mother Friendly Childbirth Initiative was created by the Coalition for Improving Maternity Services (CIMS). Baby Love fully agrees with and supports all aspects of the Initiative. Our classes and curriculum reflect this. Additionally, Baby Love also fully supports the Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative, and our breastfeeding classes were strictly designed to meet the standards of the MFHI Ten Steps, and we created our breastfeeding support group to meet step 10 of the BFHI.
Yes, we do, and at no charge!! However, we only allow ONE observer per class out of respect for the enrolled families. If you are interested, please contact us quickly to reserve your spot. We also ask that you be respectful of the teachers and the families. While we value your insight, please keep the scope of the class and our time constraints in mind. Any questions about the material should be addressed outside of class time.
Part of the reason for creating BabyLove was to create a dedicated space that can be used by others in the community. We welcome support groups, other educators, workshops, and events, but we do reserve the right to refuse the space to anyone who does not fit within the mission and vision of BabyLove. We strive to make the space an affordable option; please contact us for availability and fees.
